​2nd Annual Tweed Ride

After the huge success of this ride in 2023 we return with the second annual Chichester Tweed Ride. The ride is a leisurely roll around town and thereabouts with a few stops on the way. Come along in your tweeds or tweed like outfit on any bicycle while enjoying the city and conversations along the way.

Dress up yourself and/or your bicycle if you want and we tour town looking at the wonderful displays people have created.

*No fixed route, we take turns leading.

​Worst Day Of The Year

Mid February is supposed to be the worst weather of the year!!! We're not made of sugar, so grab your rain gear and lets take a 40 minute ride to Emsworth along the bike route for coffee and a warm-up before heading back to Chichester.

​Chips on Centurion

Meet at Chichester Cross, 5:45. We will take an ambling route to the Lighthouse Chippie. Collect our food and maybe something to wash it down from the Co-Op next door. Then get onto the Centurion Way and ride up to the statues to eat, chat and play some bike games if you want, we could even ride up to the pub at West Dean (see the new ramp at that end), decide at the time, eh!
If you have a little folding chair I would bring it as there are only two picnic tables.

​Led Zeppelin Ride

Meet with a decorated/lit-up bike, (glo-sticks, Xmas lights, that sort of thing) and a Bluetooth speaker (or not, that's OK too).
We will ride across the city taking the long route to Oving Village, up to Westampnett, then across to the Theatre to end. All while playing Led Zeppelin II and IV (see pic for playlist) having a rocking good time to some of the greatest music ever recorded!
The route has some B-road stretches, some lanes, and some 'bike path'. Google says 53 mins. But we will have a couple of stops, I guess 90mins.
Perhaps bring snacks and a drink for the end and we can hang out at the Theater picnic benches.

Tweed Ride - 8th October 2023

NOTE: you don't have to have tweed to come on the ride, just dressing 'up/nice/smart' is enough.

The ride will begin in the middle of town, at the Chichester Cross. Where North, South, East and West Streets all meet. I have planned three stops along the route. Centurion Way Sculptures for a group photo. Graylingwell Chapel to point out the local coffee roaster and maybe stop for coffee. And a fabulous Tiny Library in Whyke (so please bring a book to donate/swap if you want). The ride ends at The Chichester Inn for an adult beverage, about 300m west of the start point.

This is a NO DROP Slow Bicycle ride. I'm a devote of the Slow Bicycle Movement, so this is very much my Modus Operandi for all my rides.

​A full-on Tweed Ride aficionado will ride in actual tweeds on a period bicycle. Probably with the scratchy underwear too, I've never asked. If you can though, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do come wearing the Full Monty if you have it.

But for the rest of us something approximating that on the bike you have WILL be equally brilliant. A flat cap goes a long way to completing your 'look'. There are several gentleman's outfitters in town, Goodrowes on The Hornet and of course, the Market, that sell suitable headwear.

All I had for my first Tweed Ride was a white shirt, black trousers, shoes (not trainers etc.) and a flat cap. I fitted in just fine. I called it 'the stable boy look'. It's the effort that counts. 

For the ladies, it seems to be all about the flouncy dress and bonnet. I have also see Ladies wearing tweed trousers and/or jackets (the bicycle was what 'allowed' trouser wearing for women). There's no rules for the ladies from what I can tell.

Above all it's an excuse to dress up, have a nice ride with nice people and enjoy the most civilised of fun.
